Can I bury my pet in the garden?
No. Under the Wastes Control Act, burying a pet — even on your own land — is not permitted. Most people never hear this. Here are the three methods the law does allow.

정식 등록된 동물장묘업체에서 화장(또는 건조장·수분해장)하고 유골을 수습합니다. 장례식·추모실을 함께 운영하는 곳이 많습니다.
★ 반드시 등록업체인지 확인하세요. 농림축산검역본부 동물보호관리시스템(animal.go.kr) → 동물장묘업 조회에서 정식 등록 여부를 볼 수 있습니다. 무등록 업체 피해 사례가 꾸준히 나옵니다.

폐기물관리법상 반려동물 사체는 생활폐기물로 분류되어, 종량제봉투에 넣어 배출하는 것도 합법입니다.
법적으로 문제가 없는 방법이지만, 정서적으로 받아들이기 어려워하시는 분이 대부분입니다. 알고 계시라고 적어 둡니다.

동물병원에 위탁

동물병원에서 사망한 경우 의료폐기물로 병원이 위탁 처리할 수 있습니다. 병원에 맡기시면 됩니다.
유골을 받으실 수는 없습니다. 유골을 원하시면 장묘업체를 이용하셔야 합니다.

폐기물관리법 위반으로 과태료가 부과될 수 있습니다. 야산·공원 매장은 더 무겁게 봅니다. 가장 많이들 하시는 방법이지만 법적으로 허용되지 않습니다.
The 30-day rule nobody knows
If your dog was registered under the Animal Protection Act, you must deregister within 30 days of its death at your district office or through Government24. A funeral certificate from a licensed crematory makes this easy. Failing to do it can bring a fine.
Check the crematory is licensed
Search animal.go.kr (Animal Protection Management System) for licensed animal funeral businesses. In a hurry, people book the first search ad they see — unlicensed operators keep appearing in consumer complaints.
Pet loss is a real grief
It is the loss of family. If the tears do not stop, if you cannot sleep, if daily life is hard for more than two weeks, it is fine to get help. Korea’s mental health helpline is 1577-0199, free and open 24 hours.
